55 and 61

Another farm shot – this is 55 and 61, two of the twenty-something cows currently living the life at Schacht Farm. They’re incredibly happy right now because two days ago they were finally released from their winter pasture to start enjoying the spring grasses again.

55 is also the friendliest cow I’ve ever seen. He’ll constantly come up to you as you’re working, wanting your attention.

Retreat

Last week, I decided that to celebrate the end of the semester that I’d take some time away for personal reflection and prayer. Being a grad student, I feel like I always have my mind on a million different things, and that prayer and solitude become complicated by the many distractions in my life.

I set about looking for a place to have a retreat like this — a personal day of reflection away from the phone, the Internet, the television and other distractions — and discovered that Indiana has its very own Benedictine Monastery. It’s located south of Paoli, near I-64. It’s a couple of hours away from Bloomington, but the facilities seemed like they’d be well worth it. I get to stay in the guest house and take a couple meals with the brothers — and can join them in prayer if I so choose.

So, come Wednesday I’m heading out for this retreat, and will return to Bloomington on Thursday afternoon sometime. Pray for my time!

Last night I went to a “Dave Rawlings Machine” concert at the Bluebird with some friends – and it was absolutely fantastic. The band was a consortium of separate artists: Dave Rawlings are Gillian Welch are amazing artists in their own right who often play together (you’d probably recognize Gillian Welch’s voice from the “O Brother, Where Art Thou” soundtrack). Added to that were three members of Old Crow Medicine Show, Ketch Secor, Willie Watson and Morgan Jahnig.

Some of the highlights included a rendition of “This Land is Your Land” in the midst of one of OCMS’s songs, “I Hear them All” and an acapella version of “Go to Sleep Little Baby.”

My favorite was probably this version of “He Will Set Your Fields on Fire,” an old-timey Gospel song I’d never heard before.

Here’s the fire-and-brimstone lyrics. Nice, huh?

Irrational anger

Spurred on by a discussion at work this morning, here is a list of ten things that make me irrationally angry.* A surprising (or maybe not-so-surprising) number of them are grammar-related.

1. White collars on colored shirts.

2. Two spaces after periods.

3. People that use the handicapped accessible button to open doors for no reason other than the fact that they’re lazy.

4. Random capitalization. I’m not just tAlKiNg AbOuT wHeN PeOpLe tyPe lIkE ThIs – sentences that have Randomly Capitalized words are often more annoying.

5. Umbrellas.

6. Poor or inappropriate use of “quotation” marks. Case in point: the splash page for IUHoosiers.com today, which encourages you to wear “white” to the basketball game Tuesday.

7. Bing.com.

8. Segues.

9. Ads that pretend not to be ads. You’re not fooling anyone! You’re on the radio, pretending like you’re just part of Paul Harvey’s natural flow of conversation. You’re in newspapers, trying to look just like the other articles. Same in magazines. And we find you on the Internet, pretending to be someone’s personal blog post about how great their a) colon cleanser, b) weight loss or c) teeth whitening systems worked. But no matter where you hide, we know what you really are.

10. Hipsters. Think trying hard to look like you’re not trying hard to look a certain way. Or fixed bike wheels. And clothing that’s too tight.

* I don’t have anger issues. Yet. And if I’ve offended you with any of this list, then I’m sorry — it’s all in fun.

Pinball

This is the amazing back part of one of the pinball machines in the Indiana Memorial Union. I pass it all the time, and decided I had to take a picture of it because it’s so great. They just don’t make pinball machines like this anymore.

Please note the incredible gore, both of the triceratops having a chunk ripped out of its back and of the T-Rex getting gored in the stomach. The three cavemen watch the fight with some interest, while a pteradacyl soars over the volcanoes in the background.

It’s like a modern Van Gogh.
